Should Conor McGregor apologise for using the word “faggot”?

Conor McGregor was caught on camera repeatedly using the word “faggot” in conversation with UFC fighter Artem Lobov on Saturday night, follow Lobov’s defeat to featherweight Andre Fili at UFC Fight Night Night 118 in Gdansk, Poland.

McGregor, with his arm around Lobov’s shoulders in the immediate aftermath of the fight, was heard to use the slur three times, presumably in reference to Fili.

Neither the Crumlin fighter nor the UFC have made any official comment on McGregor’s language after the fight.

McGregor is currently deciding his next move after losing his maiden boxing bout to Floyd Mayweather Jr. in August.

During the press tour for their clash, Mayweather apologised for using the same homophobic remark against McGregor during the London stage of the promotional activities.

“Like I said before, it’s certain boundaries we just don’t cross,” said Mayweather at the time.

“It’s OK if he wants to say certain things. Even in the press tour when I said something, I didn’t want to be negative towards lesbians or gays when I said something to him. So, I apologise.”

Many people are offended by McGregor’s use of the word and have called for him to apologise.

The word has been used as a derogatory term against gay and lesbian people in the past.

I want you to have a listen to a message we received over the weekend.

I’ve always given Conor McGregor props for working hard and being successful but last night he made a fool out of himself. I’m no Snowflake but if McGregor can only muster up the word “FAGGOT” to insult a person then he isn’t a man himself! And to read people defending his use of the word as being “ah it’s a Dub thing” – well come walk in my shoes where I’ve had to listen to words like that being used against me and my friends because of our sexuality. Children look up to this guy and what will they hear? Only their hero using such an offensive and disgusting term to slag someone else off!

What do you think of this person’s message?

Can you understand why he is so offended by the word? Or do you think people are over reacting.

Those defending him online have said that it wasn’t used as a homophobic slur and that it was more about saying that the opponent was weak. Others however, like the guy who messaged us, think that the use of the word is disgusting.

Should McGregor apologise for using the word faggot?
